History:
Ursa was born and raised in the noble sector of Kazan, the Fire Nation capital. She was very sheltered, and rarely left the large mansion that was her home. When she did, she was accompanied by someone that her father chose. Instead of leaving, often she threw herself into her studies so that her parents would stop complaining that she wasn’t doing well enough. As a young girl, Ursa wasn’t allowed at court because she was too young, and as she grew older, when she showed no interest in coming, her parents would leave her home.
She was held to very strict rules. If her grades slipped even a little, she was confined within the home, unable to leave even if she wanted to. Her parents expected perfection, and if they didn’t get it, she was to be punished. Ursa didn’t understand why they were so strict with her.
She did grow up with stories of the Avatar Roku, because it was in their heritage, and her mother was insistent that she learn it. Not that Ursa minded, in fact it was one of the few things she actually enjoyed that her parents insisted upon.
When she was nine years old, Ursa went into the city for a little while-she was tired of seeing only her walls and the angled view of the palace that her window allowed her. She wandered the streets with her father’s faithful companion. In this manner she came across a school of fan dancing. Ursa enrolled in the school, and after a short audition, was accepted despite being a little older than their average crowd.
Ursa’s parents were very unhappy that their daughter had done this without consent, but when she promised that she would keep her grades up, they told her she could try, but at the first grade slip, she would have to give up dancing.
She worked hard in her classes, and in fact, her teachers indicated a rising in the quality of her work, rather than a lowering.
Things went on in that manner for several years. Until she was fifteen in fact, Ursa gave up dancing because she could no longer keep up in her classes, and manage to practice as often as she should. So-she did the appropriate thing. Her parents were overjoyed, but Ursa was unhappy. She had really loved her dancing, and had always intended to return to it…but in a few short months, her entire world was going to be turned upside down…and she didn’t even know it yet.
When she turned sixteen, her mother came to speak with her very early in the day. Ursa was confused by her mother’s actions, but accepted her Lady-Mother into her room happily. She figured her mother was going to insist that she begin coming to court so that she could meet people or something of that nature-certainly she didn’t expect what her mother had told her.
Ursa was informed that she was to marry the younger Prince, Ozai-a man she had never met in her life. She had only seen him once – and that had been at a great distance. That day she was moved into the palace. She lived there for three days as the final preparations for her wedding were made.
Ursa was upset, and remained within her rooms for nearly the entire time. The one time she left them, she had wandered out into the garden for a few moments of fresh air. While she was there, she met the young Lu Ten. She sat with him for a little while before his father came. In that manner, she met Iroh.
They spoke for a few moments and in that time, Iroh formed an opinion of the clearly sheltered girl. He didn’t know how things would go, but he decided that it wouldn’t hurt to be kind to her. Despite her efforts to hide the fear, he saw it. Iroh soothed Ursa, and told her that she would be fine.
When they parted, Ursa was heartened, the elder prince was very kind...she thought that maybe it wouldn’t be so bad after all…but she still hadn’t met the man that she was to marry…and that scared her a little.
Finally, the day of the wedding came. Servants invaded her rooms to prepare her for the “lovely” occasion. She went along with it, unhappy though she was that she hadn’t been able to speak with the man that she was to marry this day. Once she was ready, Ursa was led out into the plaza, where she laid eyes on her husband as well as many more people than she had ever been around.
As she approached the dais where the wedding was to occur, a shiver ran down her spine. Ozai didn’t look a thing like Iroh had…he didn’t have that same gentle air around him. Actually, to her, he looked cold and cruel, but she told herself that she was overreacting and quickly took her place on the dais.
Once there, she saw her parents in the crowd, and turning towards the royal family on one side, she received a joyful wave from Lu Ten and an encouraging smile from Iroh. For a moment she turned her gaze to Ozai, who looked faintly annoyed. At that point the wedding started.
That night, Ursa lay with Ozai. She knew that she would come to care for him-or to at least stand him. She knew that she had no choice in the matter. She lay quietly, and rested-she let him have his will. A peace settling around her...she would live.
Within the year she conceived her first child. Ozai was confident that it would be male. Ursa didn’t really care one way or the other. For the last year, she had been trapped within a prison, maybe a very beautiful prison, but it was a prison to her. She wasn’t supposed to leave the palace for any reason without expressed permission.
Ursa came to love Ozai-it took her months, but she did come to care for him. It was love that would survive all but the most intense fires. It seemed, also that he loved her, things weren't violent between them-instead they were calm-at least mostly. Time passed, and Ursa gave birth to another child, a daughter this time. Azula they named her, after her grandfather Azulon, the fire lord.
Years passed quietly, and Ursa spent more and more time in her garden. Finally, Zuko turned ten years old, the City of Ba Sing Se was about to fall to Iroh…and disaster struck. Lu Ten was killed in the heat of battle-Iroh pulled his troops back…and Ozai caught wind of it all.
Azula called Iroh weak, and Ursa defended him. But while Azula distracted Ursa for a little while…Ozai had formulated a plan that would turn Ursa’s world upside down. By the time Ursa saw it coming-the plan was already in action. Ozai tried to turn Azulon against his first born son-an attempt that was destined to fail from the beginning. It angered Azulon, as expected…Azulon demanded retribution for this act of betrayal. He decreed that Ozai was to kill his own first born son.
For once, the fact that Azula tended to listen in to conversations she wasn’t meant to hear was helpful. Her daughter provided the information that Ursa would need to save Zuko’s life that night…even though Azula hadn’t intended to do so. Ursa confronted Ozai, and he admitted freely that he was expected to kill Zuko. She left him there, then, knowing what she had to do.
Ursa went silently to her son’s room, he was already asleep-but she awoke him. She told him goodbye, and hugged him tightly. He was dazed still, as she left, but she had to go, if she were to finish her plan before daybreak.
From there she went silently to Azulon’s room, where he lay sleeping. She pulled out the needle that she had coated with a deadly poison-and she slid it into one of Azulon’s veins. He never moved…never even drew another breath.
Ozai confronted her, and she confessed to her crime. She left the capital directly. She had until sunrise to be clear of the city, or she would be executed.
She fled, to the earth kingdom. She settled in Ba Sing Se. Even after it was conquered by fire nation troops, she didn't leave. She remained, working diligently, and doing her best to remain unnoticed. When the white lotus attacked [read: liberated] the city, Ursa joined their forces. In the end, she helped them secure the city.
She spotted Iroh and Jeong-Jeong from a distance, as the fight ended. But, instead of rushing to them and letting herself be known, Ursa fled. Within an hour she had managed to flee the walls of the city.
Ursa didn't believe herself worthy nor ready to face the great pair. And worse, she didn't believe herself ready to face Zuko, as much as she wanted to. And she knew, that if Iroh found her, he would take her to Zuko in a heartbeat...and there would be no argument.
In the weeks since that hastily made decision, Ursa has come to regret it.
